Em 2024, a NATO celebra 75 anos de existência, organização de defesa coletiva à qual Portugal aderiu como membro fundador. Para assinalar a ocasião, o Instituto de Defesa Nacional realiza a conferência internacional “NATO and Euro-Atlantic Security in a Geopolitically Competitive World” no dia 17 de junho.
Na atual conjuntura de regresso da guerra à Europa, de fim da ordem de paz euro-atlântica e de intensificação da competição entre as grandes potências, a guerra da Rússia contra a Ucrânia, em curso há mais de dois anos, reforçou a unidade transatlântica e o papel da NATO. Contudo, a Aliança Atlântica depara-se com inúmeros desafios na antevisão das decisões a tomar no decurso da Cimeira de Washington. É neste quadro que iremos debater o contexto atual e futuro de segurança e defesa da Aliança Atlântica para os aliados europeus e norte-americanos, assim como o alargamento da NATO à Finlândia e à Suécia, a segurança euro-atlântica e o Indo-Pacífico, a digitalização da defesa euro-atlântica e a proteção de infraestruturas críticas.
In 2024, NATO celebrates 75 years, a collective defense organization that Portugal joined as a founding member. To mark the occasion, the National Defense Institute will hold an international conference on ‘NATO and Euro-Atlantic Security in a Geopolitically Competitive World’ on June 17th.
In the current situation of the return of war to Europe, the end of the Euro-Atlantic peace order and the intensification of competition between the great powers, Russia’s war against Ukraine, ongoing for more than two years, reinforced transatlantic unity and NATO’s role. However, the Atlantic Alliance faces numerous challenges on the way to the Washington Summit. It is within this framework that we will debate the current and future security and defense context of the Atlantic Alliance for European and North American allies, as well as NATO’s enlargement to Finland and Sweden, euro-Atlantic security and the Indo-Pacific, the digitalization of Euro-Atlantic defense and protection of critical infrastructures.
